BHPBilliton Neptune Production Riser Flex Joints

Issue: 22 February, 2007

In February of 2007, Acute Technological Services successfully completed the assembly welding of the two eight-inch Production Riser Flex Joints for BHPBilliton's Neptune Development Project.

The project was a joint effort between Oil States Industries and Acute Technological Services. The Neptune Flex Joints were manufactured by Oil States Industries in Arlington, Texas and were shipped to Acute's Houston facility for final assembly welding and NDE. The Flex Joint Assemblies consisted of production piping and J-Lay Collar forgings which were welded to the flex joint forgings using a combination of Automatic Orbital Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Submerged Arc Welding processes.

Welding procedure development and qualification, including full scale resonant fatigue testing, was directed by Robert Huddleston who has served as a welding engineer for Acute Technological Services since 2003. Robert's efforts during procedure development yielded a welding procedure with outstanding mechanical properties which would subsequently prove to exceed specified requirements for cyclic fatigue performance. Moreover, the Neptune Flex Joint Assemblies were delivered on time and on budget.
